Ed Barradell, The University of Law Student Association

Standing in the election for Democratic Procedures Committee

Candidate statement

The NUS has not listened to us.  The NUS Reform proposal before us today does not represent what conference in 2023 called for.  Rather than increasing NUS's to call for change, the proposed structures will reduce the power of students from Further Education and Scotland, Wales & NI from impacting national policy.

If elected, I will continue to fight for a fair and democratic union that actually represents the views of students.

Luca Di Bona, Oxford University Students' Union

Standing in the election for Democratic Procedures Committee

Candidate statement

We've seen DPC silencing radical voices across NUS, limiting the power of students to stand up for real change. I promise to properly incorporate all delegates in our democratic processes and discussions, and ensure radical voices can be heard in NUS, helping restore trust in an institution so many of us have little faith in, and helping students build a better world.

Timber Hill, University of Bristol Students' Union

Standing in the election for Democratic Procedures Committee

Candidate statement

It's important that people who care about democratic procedure run in these elections, in the event that Reform falls at this conference. In my term as a sabbatical officer at Bristol SU, I've fought hard to strengthen student power within democratic events - ensuring the student movement remains for the students, by the students.

If reform falls and I am elected, I will ensure that students retain power at NUS democratic events. We need the ability to robustly hold FTOs to account, the ability to amend motions, and the opportunity to use our time at conference to properly shape motions.

Fayaz Kareem, The Students' Union at UWE

Standing in the election for Democratic Procedures Committee

Candidate statement

I'm Fayaz (he/him), VP Community and Welfare at UWE Bristol, and one of the proposers of the Campaign for International Student Equality. I'm running for DPC to ensure that international students have a voice in our democracy. If you've heard me speak today, you'll know that I'm angry that NUS has failed to take action on the policies we discussed in Harrogate last year. I believe that a reform of NUS is necessary, and that our unions need to be involved in that process. We want to be heard, to work collaboratively, and to build a solid plan for change.

Alex Martin, University of Exeter Students' Guild

Standing in the election for Democratic Procedures Committee

Candidate statement

My experience:

Two years as a student union trustee

Two-time NUS rep/delegate

Writer on NUS issues for Exepose

New President of the Exeter Students’ Guild

Recent NUS policy on democracy and engagement has been a failure that has let down our members and crushed our national influence. Just this year the approach to officer elections has substantially dropped turnout and accountability and different reforms could make this much worse in future years. If elected I will use my experience to fight this trend and push for the transparency and accountability in the NUS we all deserve.

Sophia Nasif, Arts Students' Union

Standing in the election for Democratic Procedures Committee

Candidate statement

Hi, I'm Sof and I am a second year Sabbatical Officer at Arts SU.

I am a firm advocate for fair and all-encompassing democratic processes. Although the NUS provides spaces for student voices, I believe that it is time for a fundamental change so that inclusivity is the focal point of their democratic procedures.

If elected to the DPC, I will work with the team to ensure that our processes don't feel too complex for students to be involved in. Students should not feel excluded by the procedures meant to support them, and I want to fix that.
