What is Liberation?
At NUS, Liberation means working collectively to fight oppression and supporting each other to heal from it.
NUS Liberation builds on a long history of individuals and groups that represent Disabled, LGBT+, Racialised, Trans and Women students and apprentices, playing a crucial role in NUS's impact on education and society.
On this page you can find everything we are doing at NUS Liberation and how to get involved. You can also sign up here to get updates and join the Liberation Collective.

Find out more about the Liberation Collective!
The Liberation Collective is NUS’ new space to strengthen and support liberation activism and it is led by students and apprentices from our five liberation groups: Disabled, LGBT+, Racialised, Trans and Women.
The Collective is the result of a 5-year process of consultation, research, co-design and democratic activity with participation from all liberation groups and all nations, as well as HE and FE members. Become a member and collaborate with others to build a national network of liberation activists.
Watch this video to discover how our Liberation Collective is organised.

Meet the Liberation team!
Saranya Thambirajah is our Vice President Liberation and Equality, elected at NUS Liberation Conference 2024.
Saranya drives the political direction of NUS's liberation campaigns, and ensures that all NUS campaigning has a liberation focus.
She works with students nationally to create campaigns based on the priorities of students as put forward by representatives of students' unions at NUS Conferences, opinion polling from WhatStudentsThink, and input from members of the Liberation Collective.
