Trans Rights Campaign - Support and Resources for SUs and Students

Following the ruling of the Supreme Court on the definition of 'sex' in the Equality Act 2010, NUS has published a series of resources to help students' unions, student groups and students activists to fight back against the rolling back of trans rights.

If you'd like to receive updates on NUS' work on trans rights, please sign up for campaign updates on this page.

EHRC Consultation - closes 11:59pm on Monday 30 June

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has launched a consultation on its code of practice for services, public functions and associations.

This is a vital consultation for trans and non-binary students and people across the UK, and on 6th June 2025 NUS published guidance for students' unions on submitting organisational responses to consultation.

What can students' unions / students' associations do?

We need as many SUs / SAs as possible to respond to the consultation as organisations to achieve a nationally coordinated student movement response.

  1. Submit an organisational response from the SU based on our guidance
  2. Meet with your institution and encourage them to submit a response that is as aligned as possible, taking our guidance, and your SUs response into consideration
  3. Encourage student groups to submit responses – especially women’s societies, LGBTQ+ and Trans groups/networks
  4. Mobilise individual students to respond through Pride Month comms and point them to Transactual’s guidance

What can individual students do?

Transactual, Scottish Trans and Mermaids, who have produced detailed guidance for individual respondents. We would encourage any individuals who are seeking to respond to the EHRC Consultation to make use of this guidance alongside NUS UK’s.
