We stand in full solidarity with the Muslim community in Peacehaven and across the UK following the shocking Islamophobia attack on Peacehaven Mosque. Our thoughts are with those affected, including the two people inside the mosque at the time who were fortunate to escape with their lives.
This hateful act is just one of a series of increasingly violent attacks on Muslims that have gone underreported in the media. Far from an isolated incident, these attacks are being carried out by people emboldened by dangerous far-right rhetoric against Muslims, migrants and other marginalised groups. We urgently need strong political leadership to unequivocally challenge rising violence and hate.
At this deeply unsettling time, Muslim students across the country will feel less safe going about their everyday lives, so make sure to check in on your Muslim friends to see how they’re doing. We call on governments across the UK to take real action to counter Islamophobia on our streets and the hate that is fuelling division in our communities. We also urge universities, colleges and students’ unions to reach out and reaffirm their commitment to protecting and supporting our Muslim students.
