The Head of the Palestinian Mission to the UK, Dr. Husam Zomlot, has addressed over 200 student reps at an NUS England event. This comes as NUS UK and students’ unions have been supporting Palestinian scholarship students to get to UK universities.

We are devastated by the awful attack on the Jewish community in Manchester this morning as a congregation marked Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Our thoughts are with the victims and everyone affected at this deeply distressing time for Jews in Manchester and across the country.

Two days ago, the Home Office sent an email to international students warning them of their recent move to reassess and potentially revoke asylum status for thousands, on the basis that they first arrived through student status. This action is a dangerous escalation of a policy agenda steeped in xenophobia, political opportunism, and a fundamental failure to understand and empathise with those seeking safety.

In response to the government’s decision to ban the prescription of puberty blockers to under-18s with gender dysphoria indefinitely, NUS UK Vice President for Liberation and Equality, Saranya Thambirajah, said:

At NUS, we stand in solidarity with the migrants, racialised and Muslim communities that have faced xenophobic, racist, and Islamophobic violence in the last week. The distressing events unfolding now are not isolated incidents but the result of a growing and dangerous narrative that has served to normalise racist and anti-migrant sentiments.
