NUS’ purpose is to bring about ahead-of-the-curve change at a scale that students and SUs couldn’t achieve alone.
Our enduring hope is for a just society where everyone can access opportunity and possibility through lifelong education. Our value is measured by the change we collectively make in the world.
What’s so special about us?
As a coordinated collective, students play a unique role in our society, creating hope, vision and solutions for the future.
Students’ unions and NUS exist to harness the collective power and potential of students at a local and national level. We are one of the largest social justice movements in the world and our defining feature is that we are the vanguard of social change.
100 years of social justice
NUS was founded on Ivison Macadam’s idea that ‘if students are cooperating today surely there is hope for tomorrow’.
In the last 100 years our movement has proudly faced into society’s most existential challenges: war, fascism, apartheid, oppression, poverty, universal public services. History shows that it is students who find the solutions to society’s challenges.
We are currently seeking people who want to join our board to help make this happen.
We are seeking to recruit the widest possible pool of talent to be NUS UK Lay Directors. We need people who can oversee strategy, risk and organisational development, but we also need a bit more than that.
We’re interested in the people who can support great campaigns, bring students together, and who can influence policy at the highest level. We’re particularly keen to hear from candidates with any of the following areas of expertise:
- Income diversification, business development and/or grant fundraising
- Legal knowledge around campaigning
- Public Relations
- Communications and marketing, especially digital Strategy and social media
- Community organising and mobilisation
- Liberation campaigns and change making politics
We want a wide range of applicants with a diverse range of skills who share a common belief in the power of students to make change.
We’re totally committed to equality of opportunity for all. We welcome applications from individuals regardless of their age, disability, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation. We particularly welcome applications from black, asian and minority ethnic candidates, as they are currently under-represented as Directors of NUS UK and within the sector more broadly.
We’re not going to be a typical campaigning organisation and we believe diversity is our strength. If you are as excited as we are about what NUS UK can achieve over the next three years then we want to hear from you.
