Call for Evidence: Impact of Guarantors on Student Renters

The new government’s Renters’ Rights Bill presents a crucial opportunity to improve student housing, but we must ensure it addresses students’ needs. NUS is organizing a National Lobby Day on October 23rd, 2024, to advocate for the abolition of guarantor requirements, outlawing rent up front, and to ensure there’s no student exemption to no fault evictions. We need as much information as we can to support these asks, particularly the abolition of guarantors, because the problems associated with the practice might not be immediately clear to some. We are seeking comprehensive evidence from students’ unions on the impact of guarantors on student renters. Please provide detailed responses to the following sections to help us understand the challenges and solutions related to guarantor requirements.

The more in depth you can be, the more we can help student renters, so please take the time to plan your responses and collect your data.
