86% of parents support their kids financially at uni - fix student maintenance support to take pressure off families

New data has revealed that the cost of supporting a child at university puts strain on 84% of families' finances. When families are already struggling under the cost-of-living crisis, this is unacceptable.

  • Increase the maximum maintenance loan to be equivalent to minimum wage.  
  • Update parental thresholds to reflect inflation since they were frozen in 2008.
  • Make it easier for students to be classified as ‘independent’, and thereby receive the maximum level of loan, if they are not supported by their parents.
