In his leader's speech today at Labour Party Conference, Andy Burnham said “They {young people} have had it tougher than us, working hard, paying bills, trying to save; but looking at a student loan which never gets any smaller."
Reacting, Lewis Wilson, National Union of Students England Vice President said
“This Labour Government have heard the outcry from five million plan 2 voters. Our student loans are freezing our futures, putting home ownership out of reach for so many of us who have just done what we were told would be best – 'go to university, get a good job, and don’t worry about the debt.'
“I’m relieved we starting to get on the same page about the problem. This conference was all about 'hoping again', and believe me, my generation wants to be able to hope. But we can only build that hope with a fixed student funding system that works for every graduate: maintenance grants and fair repayment terms for plan 2, plan 5 and the students who come next.”
