The government have just released their Autumn budget, which details their financial plans for the next 6 months

The government have introduced a new law that cuts the time international students can stay in the UK after graduating from 2 years to 18 months. 

Two days ago, the Home Office sent an email to international students warning them of their recent move to reassess and potentially revoke asylum status for thousands, on the basis that they first arrived through student status. This action is a dangerous escalation of a policy agenda steeped in xenophobia, political opportunism, and a fundamental failure to understand and empathise with those seeking safety.

Mihita Parekh is the Education Officer at Middlesex University Students' Union. She gave this speech to 10 MPs, a Lord, and 50 student leaders in parliament at the APPG for Students on 29th January 2025.

New government figures show that applications to study in the UK by international students have dropped by 17% since 2023.

The National Union of Students has branded the pledge self-destructive and ideologically driven. 

Responding to reports that the Prime Minister will tomorrow backtrack on plans to restrict or scrap the graduate route visa, NUS Vice President Higher Education, Chloe Field, said: 

This morning, the Migration Advisory Committee recommended that the government maintain the Graduate Route visa.

New research published jointly by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), Kaplan International Pathways and the National Union of Students (NUS) and undertaken by London Economics reveals the net benefits to the UK Exchequer of the Graduate Route visa scheme.
