New government proposal stifles free speech and academic freedom

University is a place where ideas are discussed, debate heard and concepts criticised, comments NUS Journalist Mariya Hussain. It is a place of education that allows for the expansion of the mind by making full use of the right to freedom of speech. However the new Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill currently being considered by Parliament would curtail and stifle that freedom, and have a “seriously inhibiting effect on bona fide academic debate in universities”.
