Shout about your housing horror stories this Halloween

Friday 28 October 2016 Welfare and Student Rights

Slime runs down the walls, the floorboards creak and things go bump in the night – in other words; the walls are mouldy, the floor is damp and the roof is caving in. This Halloween, we’re asking you to speak out about the things that spook you out in your student home.

While some will be spending this Halloween trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins, bobbing for apples and working out how they can dress up as Brexit, for millions of student renters across the UK, the scariest thing is our unsafe, unhealthy homes - from mice and cockroaches to broken appliances.

That’s why this Halloween weekend, NUS has teamed up with the Acorn and Generation Rent to organise a video speak-out.

We want to make the case for our aim: a national renters' union. If you or any of your friends have a housing horror story, we’re calling on you to tell us about it by sending in a short video.

Here’s how you can do it:

Step 1. Join the ‘Acorn Tenant Support Group’ on Facebook!

500 tenants use this Facebook group to provide peer support to each other with housing problems – join it here!

Step 2. Record and share your video to the group!

Got the Facebook Groups app on your phone? If not, first download it on the Appstore or GooglePlay, then go into the app and you can use Facebook Live to stream a video straight to the group.

Alternatively, record your video on your phone, tablet or desktop, and upload it to the group when you’re happy with it.

Step 3. Invite your friends!

Finally, share the invite to the Tenant Support Group in any relevant groups or platforms with your students.

It’s that easy! Tell us your story straight to camera, in fancy dress, or show us around your housing horror! We’ll use the best videos to help us make the case for why we need a renters union in the UK.

So, between now and Monday night, join the group and upload your video!
