Wednesday 28 March 2018 NUS News

Shakira Martin has been re-elected as NUS National President at National Conference 2018.

Day two of our National Conference at the SSE Armadillo, Glasgow saw Shakira Martin re-elected as NUS National President for 2018/19.

Commenting after their election win Shakira Martin said: “I am honoured and humbled to have been elected as NUS’ National President for a second term. I was elected to listen, learn and lead, now it’s time to get real about what that means both for all forms of education, and what it means for NUS.”

Renewing her manifesto promises, Shakira Martin promised to:

  • Fight for a Minimum Living income for all students and securing the return of Grants

  • Fight for regulation that forces Universities and Colleges to reduce costs

  • Build and launch a national student rights framework on everything from academic appeals to eduroam

  • Demand universal discounts on student travel.

Shakira will begin her second term as NUS President on 1 July 2018.

Elsewhere at National Conference today, delegates re-elected Emily Chapman, Amatey Doku and Ali Milani as our Vice President (Further Education), Vice President (Higher Education) and Vice President (Welfare) respectively.

Tomorrow, students will elect our Vice President (Society and Citizenship) and Vice President (Welfare) for the 2018-2019 year.
