NUS responds to Free Speech and Censorship on Campus HEPI report

Thursday 27 June 2019

NUS Black Students Officer Ilyas Nagdee said:

"We see yet again, another report discussing the alienating impact of the Prevent Duty which reaffirms our findings from the Muslims in Education and ‘Freedom of Speech In Universities’ Research. A policy that Universities have since wielded to crackdown on student protesting on everything from the climate crisis to Palestine.

"We've seen the Prevent duty be used to cancel academic conferences, ban speakers and impose harsh measures on talks organised by student activists. We lobbied for and supported the call for an independent inquiry but in order for it to be truly investigative - the terms of reference must also allow for discussion on abolishing Prevent."
