La La Land, cleverly named for the City of Angels and the music featured in the film, is the story of Mia Dolan (Emma Stone, Easy A) and Sebastian Wilder (Ryan Gosling, The Nice Guys), the typical struggling, would-be artists couple. She is an aspiring actress, who works shifts at the Warners Brothers backlot coffee shop between auditions. He is a pianist, whose empty pockets force him to spew out cliché Christmas tunes for restaurants, in place of the dynamic jazz he loves. They meet, they fall in love, and Chazelle redefines for us the classic Hollywood love story.
