Speaking in response to the call from the Liberal Democrats for grants to help students in difficulty during the COVID 19 crisis, Zamzam Ibrahim, NUS National President, said:
“Students need urgent action from the government to make sure they all have the money they need for every day essentials such as rent and food. Our recent survey showed that up to 85 per cent of working students may need additional financial support as incomes drop, and 80% of students are concerned about their ability to manage financially during the outbreak, with this even more common among disabled students.
“This is why we’ve called for a Student Safety Net to protect students against the worst financial effects of COVID-19. While it’s good to see that MPs are listening, now we need the government to act.”
