NUS has welcomed the Rugg Review of private rented housing, published this week.
The Review concludes that any planning interventions to limit the number of Homes of Multiple Occupancy (HMOs) in certain areas would be detrimental.
Ama Uzowuru, Vice President (Welfare) said: “We welcome this independent review, which is a victory for common sense. The report acknowledges that higher education institutions are a catalyst for regeneration and job creation and that although there are some problems, these should not be taken out of proportion. Out of over 8000 wards in England, only 59 have significantly high density of student residents.
“It is important to remember that students often contribute a great deal to their community – not just through boosting the local economy, but also through their charity and fundraising activities.
“NUS encourages students' unions to engage with their local communities and local government to address problems that can arise throughout the year. It is critical, especially in light of government plans to expand university provision to 20 new towns and cities, that all parties take a thoughtful and consultative approach to these problems.”
NUS also welcomes the Report's recognition of accreditation schemes. “We believe such schemes will improve standards for all occupants of private rented housing,” Ama added.
