Students and students’ unions from across the country turned out for the annual NUS Awards ceremony. The winners of the 12 awards were announced at a glitzy ceremony held at Warwick Students’ Union.

The Awards were presented across categories including Endsleigh Student of the Year, Campaign of the Year and the presentation of a Lifetime Contribution Award to Ian King.

Held in partnership with Endsleigh Insurance, the Awards recognise the inspirational work carried out by individual students, student media and students’ unions across the UK.

Among the big winners was Joseph Akinnagbe from the University of Manchester Students’ Union, who picked up the Endsleigh Student of the Year Award, as well as a cheque for £250.

Joseph said: “It’s been amazing for me this year and this award has brought to an end the most rewarding time for me. I have got involved with so many things that impact on people’s lives.”

Another to pick up a prize was the University of Exeter Students’ Guild, which won the Higher Education Students’ Union of the Year while Canterbury College picked up the Further Education Students’ Union of the Year trophy.

Rich Stearn, President of University of Exeter Students’ Guild, said: “It feels absolutely amazing to win this Award tonight, for us they key has been to make the Guild absolutely invaluable to what being at university is all about.”

The winners were selected from some 350 nominations from students’ union and individuals in the student movement.

NUS President Aaron Porter said: “The Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate so many student and students’ union successes. We have seen some inspirational students, campaigns and students’ unions that have really changed people’s lives.

“I would like to congratulate the nominees tonight, they are all an inspiration.
I hope this is a catalyst for many more students to get involved in the student movement because when we come together we can achieve great things.”
