NUS and The Co-operative Food launch partnership
September 13th 2013NUS News
The Co-operative Food and NUS today announced a ground-breaking partnership that will see students with a NUS extra card receive a 10 per cent discount on all groceries*, at more than 3,600 participating Co-operative food stores across the UK.
This is the first time that a supermarket has offered such a deal exclusively for students and the exclusive 10 per cent discount will be available from Monday 23 September 2013. In order to claim the discount, students will need to hold a valid NUS extra card.
When we ask students what they want from the NUS extra card, a supermarket deal is always the overwhelming answer. But, to be honest, we’ve never found a partner that was right for us. And you. Until now.
The Co-operative Group is the UK’s largest mutual business, owned by nearly eight million members. They are a community-based retailer, with a store in every UK postal area and they champion fairtrade and have ethical food policies.
They are the perfect fit. In a time of rising costs, we know this will help students thrive at college and university by creating a better deal on something they buy every day.
CJ Antal-Smith, Head of Commercial – Grocery at The Co-operative Food, said:
“Students are facing increasing financial pressures while studying, and are becoming more savvy when it comes to food shopping. We wanted to help students, many of whom are living away from home for the first time, to live and cook on a budget.
“As a community-based retailer, with a store in every UK postal area, The Co-operative is ideal for students picking up food on their way to and from lectures. By offering a 10 per cent discount with NUS extra, we’re giving a big incentive for students to make good, healthy choices about the food they eat.”
Raechel Mattey, NUS Vice President said:
“When we asked our students what they most wanted from NUS extra, a supermarket deal was the overwhelming answer and 93% of students told us that a 10% discount would change the way they shop.
"We’re proud to be able to partner with The Co-operative on this; it is a community retailer which enables students to shop locally, and it leads the market with its ethical principles and its support for Fairtrade.
“This deal reflects the realities of students’ lives by addressing the financial pressures they face and the rising cost of living. It also tackles their priorities in respect of nutrition and lifestyle priorities. We want students to know that between NUS and The Co-operative, we are in tune with their needs and will do our best to help them.”
*Discount Exclusions apply: Baby milk, stamps, saving schemes, National Lottery & Health Lottery purchases, gift vouchers, phone cards, continuity programmes, in-store concessions, PayPoint, currency, fuel, cigarettes & tobacco, newspaper delivery and electrical goods.
The NUS extra Co-op discount will be available from 23 September. You can buy an NUS extra card here.
