There are six conferences that run back to back and focus on different ‘zones’ of NUS: Society & Citizenship, Welfare, Further Education, Higher Education, Union Development and Student Development.
Each of these conferences allows the people that attend to talk about issues relating to those areas, which then shape the suggestions for NUS to take on the following year. At these conferences (all excluding Student Development) a committee of 5 or 6 current students is elected to meet throughout the year and carry out the work for each of the zones. Each of these committees also has an elected member that sits on the National Executive Council (the national union of students’ representative group).
The five students that were successfully elected to the National Executive Council for 2011-12 were:
Steph Johnson from Reading University Students’ Union – representing the Welfare Zone
Rebecca Bridger from Loughborough University Students’ Union – representing the Union Development Zone
Roshni Joshi from South Downes College – representing the Further Education Zone
Sophie Richardson from Queen Mary Students’ Union (University of London) – representing the Higher Education Zone
James Haywood from Goldsmiths Students’ Union – representing the Society & Citizenship Zone
You can also find out who else got elected to the committees and read an overview of discussions, including videos of a number of guest speakers that took place at each of the Zone Conferences.
