The individuals were arrested during a meeting  organised by ZINASU to discuss the issue of tuition fees, which at least three quarters of students are unable to pay, and how to improve the welfare of students in tertiary institutions. They were remanded under the Criminal Codification Act for ''participating in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breach of peace or bigotry.''

The student leaders must now appear in front of a Magistrates Court on Friday 21 August.

Earlier, Susan Nash, NUS Vice President (Society & Citizenship) said "This latest intimidation of student leaders must not go unnoticed or unchallenged by the international community."

Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) are encouraging to the Minister of Justice, Patrick Chinamasa, condemning the violation of the students’ rights to freedom of association, expression and assembly guaranteed underZimbabwe’s constitution and asking for all charges to be dropped.
