We agree with Vince

We agree with Vince on the need for a “re-think” on university and student funding. This means a complete rejection of the tuition fees model, both in name and in substance.

We agree with Vince that tuition fees are a higher education “poll tax”.

Any system that bases contributions on where or what you studied rather than actual earnings would have the same regressive effect.

We agree with Vince that it “can’t be right that a teacher or care worker or research scientist is expected to pay the same graduate contribution as a top commercial lawyer or surgeon or City analyst.”

Contributions must be greater for those that financially benefit most from their university education.

We agree with Vince that any reform of higher education funding system must ensure “students see the system as fair – or fairer”.

This means university vice chancellors must be clear about where additional revenues are spent.

We look forward to working with Vince Cable and the Liberal Democrats to ensure that the new system for higher education funding is fair, progressive and sustainable.
