We would like to ask for your support by voting for Votes at 16  to be included in a national POWER2010 pledge. In the coming general election, POWER2010 will be asking all Parliamentary candidates to sign a pledge, a promise of reform to which they will be held accountable after they enter office. We would like Votes at 16 to be central to this pledge.

Currently, the voting age in the UK is 18, but at the age of 16 a person can leave school, join the armed forces, get married/a civil partnership and pay tax. We believe lowering the voting age would bring voting in line with these rights and provide an incentive to encourage active participation in politics at a younger age.

We only need a few hundred votes to ensure that Votes at 16  makes the top 5.

Why you should vote for this reform?

  1. Stopping 16 and 17 year olds from voting can alienate them from politics as they feel that their views aren't heard.
  2. Lowering the voting age would force politicians to take a more active interest in issues concerning young people.
  3. If at 16 someone is paying taxes then they should have the right to have a say in how they are spent.

NUS are committed to Votes at 16 and are actively campaigning for a change in the voting age. However, we can only be successful with your support.
