Universities to return deposits within four weeks

NUS is thrilled to announce that the UUK code - which covered students in England and Wales - has included in it's revision of the code of practice for student accommodation a requirement for universities to return students' deposits within four weeks.

In 2008, NUS and Unipol put forward an Early Day Motion 1557 which called on the Government to require the tenancy deposit protection timescales for the return of students' money to be written into the UUK Approved Code of Practice for Educational Establishments.  This was because private accommodation providers and private landlords were legally bound to return a tenant's deposit within this time period, it was not in educational establishments' accommodation .

NUS found that many students were not getting their deposits back quickly and were often having to wait a number of months. This left these student at a financial disadvantage when signing for new tenancies and having to pay for their next deposit.

We think this is a great win for students in England and Wales and look forward to its inclusion in the code.
