The Green Paper

Building a Smarter Future

The Green Paper ‘Building a Smarter Future’ sets out a range of options for the future of Scotland’s universities.

Liam Burns, President of NUS Scotland:

“We won the commitment that tuition fees would be completely absent from the Green Paper and I’m glad to see that promise has been kept. We will be looking for all parties to commit to ruling out tuition fees in their own manifestos. Otherwise, they will most certainly lose student votes.

“The crisis in Scotland is about the crippling levels of student hardship that are slamming university and college doors shut on Scotland’s poorest students. It’s disappointing that these proposals seem to rule out additional public spending on student support, when only a little more money in students’ pockets could save a great deal in terms of drop out rates which not only waste talent but also public resources.

"Politicians' aims should be to improve student support, protect places, and rule out tuition fees. With the release of the Green Paper today and in the build-up to the Scottish elections, we will be expecting to see proposals that students can support with the same kind of passion that they showed in rejecting the proposals down south."
