Last night Cardiff University Students' Union held their General Election candidates hustings. All eight candidates in the local constituency were in attendance which included Labour, Plaid Cymru, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Green Party, Trade Union and Socialist Coalition, UKIP and the Monster Raving Looney Party.
An array of questions were asked by the student audience which included topics on tuition fees, access to higher education for carers and employment protection for staff in universities.
NUS Wales Deputy President, Lleu Williams challenged the candidates as to whether they had signed NUS Pledge, of which only one hadn't. All candidates who had agreed with the campaign and noted how important higher education is.
The Conservative candidate, Karen Robson noted that she was not willing to sign the pledge as she was unwilling to promise something that she could not commit to.
In Basingstoke, around 150 students attended an hour long debate between the three political parties. By the end of the debate Basingstoke Students' Union signed up John Shaw, Liberal Democrat PPC for Basingstoke to sign the NUS' pledge.
The Labour PPC had already signed the pledge and the Conservative PPC promised to read through the Blueprint. The local 6th form Queen Mary’s, will also be hosting a hustings next week so they will be following this candidate up.
The University of Sussex Students' Union is due to hold a debate today at 1pm where they will grill candidates including Green Party Leader Caroline Lucas and Labour candidate Nancy Platts who have both signed the NUS pledge.
Three of the four candidates for Glasgow Central constituency declared their support for the Vote For Students pledge at University of Strathclyde Students’ Association General Election Hustings.
The Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative Party candidates each confirmed they would vote against fees and put pressure on the government to introduce a fairer alternative. Only the Conservative candidate refused to sign the pledge.
Cambridge University Students’ Union is hosting a debate at King College on Sunday, 25 April. The debate will include Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Labour, Green and UKIP candidates.
