Hope not Hate is bringing people together – students, celebrities and politicians have all signed up to stop the BNP, a known racist and fascist party. The Kooks, Hard-Fi and Amir Khan have all joined the campaign.
Worryingly the BNP pose a real threat in this year’s European elections. In the North West, where party leader Nick Griffin is standing, the BNP only needs to add 2 per cent to its 2004 vote of 6.4 per cent to be virtually guaranteed a seat. They are also a threat in East and West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber and also in London. But they can be stopped.
Hope not Hate
All you need to do is use your vote to make sure they don’t win seats. Michael Joslin is one of many students who’s joined the campaign. He explains what he and other students are doing to stop the BNP in the North West.
“Manchester students are acutely aware of the great threat the BNP poses to this country and particularly to the North West. Wherever they go they stir up racial tension, victimise human beings for the colour of their skin and seek to destroy our great country. As passionate believers in equality and social justice, we fight them wherever we can, whenever we are needed.
“In the last few years we have campaigned to kick them out of towns like Burnley, Hyde and in Manchester itself. Hope not Hate is a fantastic organisation that celebrates the diversity of our country, standing up for the hopes of ordinary citizens not spreading the hatred that drags us all down.
Celebrity support
“We have organised a variety of events to support Hope not Hate, such as an event with the comedian Eddie Izzard attended by more than 600 people to spread the anti-BNP message and stress the importance of voting.
“We are currently helping to set up a Hope not Hate group at the University and are planning several activist sessions in the next few weeks to encourage students to vote and prevent the epic disaster that would be to allow the travesty of Nick Griffin becoming an elected representative to occur.
“All of our members are passionately supporting Hope not Hate and we will never rest until the BNP is well and truly kicked out of the North West.”
