The day of action will call on the coalition to save the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) which is a lifeline for many young people hoping to completion further education.

The campaign being run by NUS, the National Union of Teachers (NUT), the University and College Union (UCU), the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), NASUWT, Unison, Unite, GMB and the Save EMA campaign will ask protesters to contact their MP to tell them how important the EMA is.

The EMA is vital for many young people who use the funds to pay for necessities such as travel and lunch during their studies. For others it is a contribution to their household income that means they don't have to work full-time and can continue their education.

Aaron Porter, NUS President, said:

“The assault on the next generation continues, as the Government now seeks to remove vital support from the poorest sixth form and college students. The EMA transforms lives and enables college learners to stay in education and progress, rather than to drop out and have their prospects curtailed. As the government pursues a senseless policy that would price the poorest learners out of education, we will continue to fight alongside our parents and communities to save EMA.”
