Speaking following the march, Liam Burns, President of NUS Scotland, said: “Today students, lecturers and people from across Scotland marched to the Scottish Parliament to put education at the front and centre of this election campaign. It was a great show of strength and a strong message to candidates standing for election in May.

“Almost every political party in Scotland has now committed to rule out tuition fees, and all of the politicians speaking today outlined how they wish to increase the money in students’ pockets.

“We know the fight is not just about getting politicians to say the right things this side of the election. It’s about ensuring that they do the right thing after the election. We know from bitter experience that promises made before can evaporate overnight once the votes are cast.

“We must now work to ensure that candidates commit to rule out tuition fees, to protect numbers and to improve the financial help students get in their pockets and we must work just as hard so they will keep their promises after the next Scottish Government is formed.”
