Mr Clegg, along with all his Liberal Democrat colleagues, signed a pledge to vote against any rise in tuition fees. This Wednesday it was confirmed that the Deputy Prime Minister intends to break his promise and vote for fees to be trebled to £9,000 a year, despite having proposed their abolition at the general election and signing a pledge to "vote against any increase in fees."

Students, lecturers will join with their communities and march through Westminster on Wednesday November 10 for the NUS and University and College Union (UCU) Funding Our Future march to protest against cuts to higher education.

Aaron Porter, NUS President, said:

“Nick Clegg has failed to give a proper answer to students as to why he is advocating a rise in tuition fees just six months after saying he would campaign and fight against any attempt to increase the cap.

"His own manifesto proposed the costed and phased abolition of fees and called on politicians to keep their promises but he now intends to do the precise opposite and break his pledge to voters."

“Thousands of students, many of whom will have voted for Liberal Democrats because of their pledge, will be taking to the streets on Wednesday and this is a perfect opportunity for Nick Clegg to explain himself and answer the many questions students have to ask him."
