Student rights at work

Many students are working in temporary jobs or for an agency, and some are being ill treated by their employers. This affects not only current students, but also recent graduates who decide to take on temporary or agency work to pay off the debts that they incurred while studying.

We’re working with the TUC, other trade union partners, the fair pay network and bodies such as the Fawcett Society , the Child Poverty Action Group  and Oxfam  to support the Agency and Temporary Workers (Equal Treatment) Bill. This bill aims to ensure that vulnerable agency workers don’t receive less favourable conditions than permanent employees.

We’re encouraging students to make sure their voices are heard in this debate. Many of you have already written letters to and met with your MPs. Thanks to all your hard work, and that of the trade union movement, we managed to get MPs into Parliament on 22 February 2008 for the first vote. This was a significant backing, as it was the largest rebellion since 1997 and it gave a clear signal to the government that something needed to be done on this issue right away. As a result, the government has committed to establishing a commission that will be chaired by Sir George Bain, head of the Low Pay Commission.

How you can get involved

We’re continuing to support the bill as it progresses through Parliament, but we still need your help. Write to or visit your MP  and ask them to vote to protect the rights of agency and temporary staff.
