Student debt

NUS won a famous victory against HSBC  last summer, when we defeated attempts to remove the interest-free overdraft they provided to recent graduates. Work in this area has now turned to the problems that arise when students owe monies to their university or college.

Some universities and colleges are preventing students graduating because of debt incurred that’s unrelated to their studies. We’re continuing to develop a briefing on institutional debt issues and are looking at means of clarifying the legal situation when academic sanctions are applied in order to recover non-academic debt such as rent arrears.

How you can get involved

In order to get a better picture of what’s going on, we need solid examples to build a case for change. We'd like to hear from you if this is happening in your institution. Please contact david.malcolm@nus.org.uk with your experiences or for more information.
