On their annual January residential trip, no staff members were able to join the sabbatical officers from University of Central Lancashire Students’ Union due to seven inches of snow putting a spanner in the works. So, faced with the prospect of being unable to work, the officers went about built a massive snowman.

"When the snow started falling on Monday night we joked that we'd get snowed in," said John Crossley, the UCLan Media Officer. "Then when we woke up the next day we were greeted by 6 or 7 inches!

"No Union staff member could safely make the journey up to where we were staying so we made the decision to do what we could on our own.

"Then after a few hours it was playtime! It was like being 10 again, brilliant."

Elsewhere, at the University of Bath, 42 athletes from the first ParalympicsGB preparation camp were left stranded while 40 have been told to stay away because of the snow.

Other universities, including the University of the West of England in Bristol cancelled lectures whilst, in Wales, snow called a halt to exams.
