Remember Neda and act now for students in Iran

On Saturday 20 June, Neda Salehi Agha Soltan, a 26 year old Iranian student, was shot dead in Tehran. As political demonstrators continue to clash with the Iranian security forces following the announcement of the presidential election in Iran, students have faced intimidation, brutality and murder.

Wes Streeting, NUS President said, "the shocking brutality against those exercising their democratic right to protest is a flagrant abuse of human rights by the Iranian regime. The Iranian government has been embarrassed in the eyes of the world."

The actions of the Iranian government have also been condemned by students across Europe. Ligia Deca, Chairperson of the European Students' Union (ESU) said, "Silencing peaceful protest with threats and violence is unacceptable in any modern society. If Iran wants to have any credibility as a democratic state, it must listen to students’ concerns  and not try to suppress them."

NUS is calling on students across the UK to remember Neda and stand up for human rights with students in Iran. "The images of Neda dying in the streets of Tehran should never be forgotten and must act as a call to action for those of us who enjoy the freedoms that Iranian students are fighting for", says Susan Nash, Vice President Society and Citizenship at NUS.

"Please join Amnesty International  and email the Iranian Ambassador  to show that the world is watching the shameful actions of the Iranian government and standing with the Iranian people."
