NUS and NUS Services are delighted to have been commissioned to conduct trailblazing research into attitudes towards post graduate debt, particularly amongst Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) students by the British Academy.
NUS and NUS Services will work in partnership with an expert steering group to conduct this work, and deliver cutting edge findings.
This is a unique opportunity to work with undergraduate and postgraduate students, plus recent graduates from all four UK member nations to understand their thoughts and attitudes to debt and to provide senior national figures with balanced opinion.
Research will be conducted in three phases:
- Desk research will be conducted to identify the existing attitudes, impact and behaviours surrounding debt and any differences by subject type taken
- Empirical research will then be conducted to quantitatively understand undergraduate aspirations for postgraduate study, the consideration of debt, if any, and any subject differences
- Using the findings from this research, depth insight will be gathered through qualitative focus groups with postgraduate students and quantitative work with recent graduates to complete the picture of the impact of debt on postgraduate, HSS students.
The final report will demonstrate the current state of play in attitudes to post graduate debt and any differences impacting HSS students in particular.
The project will run from January 2013 until May 2013.
