The award was presented by Louis Wustemann, Editor of the Environmentalist, for the Degrees Cooler project which has engaged 20 universities across the country with over 15% of all students in participating halls signed up as Eco-Power Rangers, and average energy savings of over 9.3% to date.

Over 10,000 staff in over 250 departments are taking part and helping universities to lead by example and making the more sustainable option the easy and desirable option. Milton Keynes Council, LowC Communities and Norfolk County Council were highly commended for their sustainability projects in 2011.

The awards celebrate the achievements of young people and recent graduates learning and working for a sustainable future.  The applications were judged by an eminent panel from Society for the Environment, the Environmentalist Magazine, the EAUC (Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges) and StudentForce for Sustainability, with thanks to headline sponsors The Pera Foundation.
