The exam board regulator Ofqual has announced an inquiry into the glut of errors in exam papers taken by A-Level and GCSE students this summer.

At least nine exam papers contained errors meaning questions were difficult to understand or impossible to answer. At the time the National Union of Students (NUS) called for an urgent inquiry into the errors and was in regular contact with Ofqual to monitor progress.

Toni Pearce, NUS Vice-President (Further Education), welcoming the inquiry, said:

“I’m glad Ofqual have listened to calls to investigate why so many students had to sit papers containing errors this year.

“It is vital that students are able to have full confidence in the exam paper in front of them. We have heard from many students worried about the added stress of wondering if a difficult question is in fact unanswerable.

“It is unacceptable for exam boards to let even one error to slip through and they should be forced to compensate every student who feels they have been disadvantaged by exam board error.”
