Responding to Business Minister Pat McFadden’s call for the Low Pay Commission to consider introducing a new national minimum wage rate for apprentices, NUS President Wes Streeting said:

“This is tremendous news for the thousands of people working as apprentices across the country. NUS has been asking the Government to give apprentices a fair deal for years, and we are delighted that Pat McFadden has taken the initiative on this issue.

“As a result of the economic crisis, more and more people will need to take up apprenticeships in order to retrain to meet the demands of the labour market. It is reassuring to know that the government is going to make sure they are paid a fair wage.”
