NUS Wales secures a National Bursary Framework

Students in Wales will see a major overhaul of the student funding mechanisms thanks to the hard work of NUS Wales. On Wednesday 25 November Education Minister Jane Hutt announced a new national strategy for higher education provision and support.

Included in the strategy is a commitment to a National Bursary Framework for full and part time students studying in Wales that is based on transparency and equality of outcome for learners. Securing this policy has been a top priority for NUS Wales over recent years and it has now won the argument for fairer funding for students in Wales.

This win comes at a critical point for the rest of the UK as the fee's review in England gets underway. The case for a fair funding system for students has already been won in Wales and will strengthen the NUS position fighting for a similar solution in England.

NUS Wales will continue to work towards a fair and transparent funding system for students in Wales but this is an amazing step in the right direction.

NUS Wales President, Katie Dalton said:

“We are delighted that the Minister has made further commitments to the National Bursary Framework, especially with regards to equality of outcomes for students. We look forward to working with sector bodies to ensure that a fairer system of student support is implemented as soon as possible.

“Also, we are very pleased to see Coleg Ffederal enter the implementation stage as this has been a key priority for our Welsh speaking members for many years. We look forward to contributing to this process.”
