It is clear that increased top-up fees will lead to a funding gap for Scottish institutions and NUS Scotland, through their Vote for Students  campaign, have been campaigning against any increase.

Responding to the move Liam Burns, President of NUS Scotland, said:

"I'm very happy that the Scottish Liberal Democrats have pledged not to vote to raise top-up fees in the next parliament. It's a very welcome move that will help to protect students and universities here in Scotland.

"If the cap on top-up fees is lifted we know there will be a funding gap in Scotland. Scottish universities will become comparably poorer and talented lecturers will flock to better resourced institutions south of the border. To make matters worse increased fees will most likely mean a decrease in public funding, with Scotland getting less in it's block grant.

"Candidates will not get away with side stepping tuition fees as an 'English issue'. Scottish MPs were crucial in introducing top-up fees in the first place and they will be crucial in ensuring the cap is not lifted after this election. We need every candidate in the next election to pledge to stand up for students here in Scotland.

"The student vote is going to be crucial at the General Election with a number of Scottish constituencies where the student vote will be decisive. We will be working to get more candidates from across the parties signed up to pledge to protect Scottish students from increased top-up fees elsewhere in the UK.

"If candidates say no to the pledge, students will say no at the ballot box."
