The Scottish Government’s Consultation 16+ Learning Choices: First Step Activity and Financial Support has proposed changes to the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), which would see the income threshold for qualification for the £30 EMA reduced and the £20 and £10 payments scrapped.

Responding the proposed changes, Gurjit Singh, NUS Scotland President, said: "The support given to young further education students through the EMA system is vital, and needs to be increased.
“The Government needs to think long and hard before making changes that would reduce the amount of money in students' pockets."
