The NUS Scotland conference, attended by delegates from colleges and universities across Scotland, took place in Irvine on the weekend in which the Scottish Labour Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrats have each stated that they will not introduce fees in Scotland after the Scottish Parliamentary elections this May.
Liam Burns, who has served as President for the maximum of two years, said:
“Robin and Graeme are the most dedicated and talented students I’ve had the privilege to work with, and have already spent years working to improve the lives of the students they represent in Aberdeen.
"Although I am moving on from NUS Scotland, I leave college and university students in far better hands with two of the strongest fighters for student issues in Scotland. ”
Robin Parker, President-elect of NUS Scotland, said:
“I am absolutely honored and delighted to have been elected NUS Scotland President for the year to come. It’s going to be a hugely challenging year for the student movement.
"But if we maintain the momentum we currently have, I have no doubt that students can make sure we stop the introduction of fees, maintain graduate numbers and college places, and increase student support.”
Graeme Kirkpatrick, Depute President-elect of NUS Scotland, said:
“I am incredibly grateful and humbled to have been elected NUS Scotland Depute President.
"I know from experience the unique challenges that college students in Scotland face, and when I take up the post in July, I will work hard to not only fight for university students but improve funding for college students as well and help college students’ associations get the support the need to better represent their members.”
