NUS launches LGBT healthcare manifesto

Most LGBT people have stories to tell about their experiences with the health service, and most of them aren't good. NUS LGBT, along with Stonewall, Terrence Higgins Trust and Unison, is pleased to launch the LGBT Healthcare Manifesto, detailing 10 demands for a more LGBT inclusive healthcare system.

The manifesto calls for training on LGBT issues for junior doctors, better sexual health provision for LGBT women, a review of the treatment protocol for trans people under the age of 18 and funding to match the rising HIV diagnoses in Gay and Bisexual Men.

NUS LGBT Officer Lucy Brookes said: "We are delighted that we have the support of Stonewall, THT and Unison in our healthcare work this year.
The healthcare system consistently ignores, devalues and discriminates against the LGBT community, whether directly or indirectly, and together we must start to address these issues.

Students in general have a hard time getting access to appropriate sexual and mental healthcare inparticular, and if you are an LGBT student, this often makes it even harder."

The demands will shape the campaigns NUS LGBT runs on healthcare for the next year and into 2010.
