NUS has issued a response to a report by the pro-free-market think tank, Reform, which advocates the abolition of the cap on fees in higher education and the handing over of student loans to commercial banks.
"Extremely foolish"
"Against the current economic backdrop, it would be extremely foolish to trust the provision of any major public service entirely to the market," says NUS President Wes Streeting.
"Taken together, these proposals would put in jeopardy the long-term security of thousands of vital courses serving our most deprived communities. They would confine the vast majority to a utilitarian education system based on weighing up financial risk, while the wealthy elite continues to enjoy the rich rewards of a liberal education."
