The wait is finally over, and today’s A Level result show an improvement in the overall pass rate, which is at 97.5% is up by 0.3 per cent from last year.

Furthermore, a reported 26.7% of students today achieved the top grade as compared to 25.9% last year.

This improvement continues the recent trend, which has seen a steady rise in A Level pass rates, commenting NUS President Wes Streeting said:

“Today’s A-level results should be celebrated, not subjected to well worn claims that the questions and marking systems are getting easier.

“Those who continue to devalue the achievements of A-level students repeatedly fail to recognise that the year-on-year rise in standards has come about because of hard work on the part of the students and their teachers.

We should be congratulating them, not cynically undermining their achievements.”

Having received their A-level results, some university applicants now have to contend with the reality that there is a shortage of university places.

NUS President Wes Streeting continued: “We remain concerned that, despite passing their A-levels today, many university applicants will still be disappointed.

The Government may have recently increased university places by 10,000, but thousands of people who have applied to study non-STEM subjects are going to be without a place this summer.

“We understand the current pressures on public finances, but the Government must also make the right long-term decisions. It is surely better to bear the cost of additional university places now than to shoulder the burden of long-term unemployment later.”

And for the students who unfortunately have not achieved the A Level results they needed, Wes offers reassurance,

“There is advice and guidance available to those who may not have achieved the grades they had hoped for. Information offered by UCAS or the NUS website can help them decide what to do next.”

Students who are now going through the clearing process can obtain help from the UCAS website.
