Aaron Porter, NUS President, said:

"Congratulations to everyone getting their A-level results today. These are amongst the hardest exams you'll ever take and you should feel proud of yourself just for reaching the end of two years of hard slog. Whatever you find when you open your results envelope take a moment to give yourself a pat on the back and enjoy the feeling of a job well done.

"For many of you this will be the first step on the way to university and I hope you will get involved with your Students' Union and help us improve life for students, locally, nationally and around the world.

"Government under-funding means that a great many well qualified and ambitious young people will miss out on university places this year and a broken system of funding means that many will have felt that the debt they will incure in order to further their education makes university to expensive for them to risk.

"I, and everyone at NUS, will spend the next year fighting for the right of everyone with the ability and aspiration to be able to go to on to higher education without the fear of debt hanging over them and I hope that you will continue to support us as we battle against government cuts. In November we will be holding a national demonstration with a march through London and I hope that you will join us to show the government that they cannot ignore the ambitions of an entire generation.

"But, that is for the future, today whether you have secured a university place, are negotiating clearing, planning a year away from education, or are moving into the world of work make sure you enjoy the celebrations and once again a huge congratulations from everyone at the National Union of Students."
