Responding to the news, NUS President Wes Streeting said:
“We welcome the attention today’s Opposition Day Debate is drawing to the student loans debacle. While ministers have paid close attention to this crisis and will be reluctant to prejudge the outcome of the Student Loans Company’s review, I have no confidence that any internal review led by the shambolic management of the SLC will lead to a full and frank assessment of what has gone so spectacularly wrong.
“Ministers must now step in to ensure that the management of the SLC are held to account for a fiasco that has left hundreds of thousands affected by late payments, lost documentation and a miserable start to their first term at university.”
David Willets, Shadow Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, said "In our debate, I will be asking ministers to give a firm deadline for sorting out the mess at the Student Loans Company."
The Student Loans Company announced they would hold an internal inquiry into problems with the administration of this year's student loans and grants on Monday, when up to 116,000 applications remained in processing over a week after university courses started.
