Following the Students’ Unions 2011 conference and at an awards ceremony attended by over 500 students, student representatives and students’ union staff, NUS has presented its annual awards recognising the hard work of students’ and students’ unions in campaigning and voluntary work.
Amongst the winners were Tabaya Nicholson who was named Endsleigh Student of the Year for tirelessly working at the University of Manchester to raise awareness of mental health issues; Northumbria Students’ Union who were named Higher Education Students’ Union of the Year after a big push to increase involvement in student societies and community engagement; and Dudley College Students’ Union, the Further Education Students’ Union of The Year, who in a tumultuous year for college students who took their union from strength to strength and got more than 2000 students involved in their Save EMA activities.
Judges this year included NUS President, Liam Burns; Shami Chakrabarti CBE, the BBC’s Sean Coughlan and Endsleigh Managing Director Ian Passmore.
NUS President, Liam Burns, said:
“Once again we’ve seen an exceptional field of nominations that recognise the vital role that students play in their local communities.
“The last year has been an incredible one for students’ and their representatives. Throughout some of the worst ever attacks on access to education they have remained dogged and enthusiastic and it is wonderful to be able to recognise some of the most inspiring work they have done delivering for students and working in their communities.
“Meeting these people and seeing the work they’ve done leaves you with a real sense of hope for the future and the fight to get more support for students from a cynical Government.”
