NUS and UNISON launch The Living Wage Campaign

The Living Wage campaign is about the right of staff in our institutions to live without fear of destitution. Over the past 20 years, living wage campaigns have got £70 million into the pockets of some of the most vulnerable in society and lifted 10,000 people out of poverty.

A few weeks ago we saw student groups in Manchester University win the living wage for all full-time staff on campus. Over the past few weeks in the run up to national conference, unions from Durham University to Dudley College have been submitting motions to commit to not only campaign for a fair and living wage for all staff in their institution, but for staff in their students' union too.

This month NUS and UNISON are launching our Living Wage campaign at www.alivingwage.co.uk where you can download resources and a toolkit. Throughout the next year we will be supporting students’ unions to develop and tailor their own local campaigns for the living wage with a number of campaign resources and practical ideas.

This campaign is only successful when students are building relationships with low paid staff and trade unions in their institutions, and working with their students' unions, to give those staff a platform to fight for the living wage for themselves. NUS will help you to do this!

From our partnership with Citizens UK, the national leaders of community organising, we'll be running NUS's first Masterclass on the living wage. Get trained on how to be a community organiser and win a living wage, like London Citizens have been doing for the last 20 years. See www.citizensuk.org for more. Spaces are limited so if you want to go, email us here.

Does your institution pay the Living Wage?

If so let us know and you could get accredited by the Living Wage Foundation

More info to follow in the weeks after the #comeclean week of action.
