Manchester Academy wins award

Manchester Academy wins the title of Best Entertainment Venue in the MCR Awards. Students’ unions are amazing places to visit. That’s a fact that has now been recognised and Manchester fully deserves it.

The Manchester Academy – fully owned and operated by the University of Manchester Students’ Union – has been awarded the title of Best Entertainment Venue in the MCR Awards for operating such a fantastic venue for students.

Previously recognised by the NME

Previously voted as the North West's top venue by the NME, being students’ union owned The Academy boasts both cheap drinks and ticket prices for an extensive list of quality acts in its four venues, including signed bands from the UK and abroad.

Great names and bands perform at the Manchester Academy 

The union’s stages used to be called the Main Debating Hall and The Hop and Grape, but they were renamed Academy 2 and Academy 3 when The Manchester Academy opened in 1990.

Recent acts at the Union have included everyone from The Kooks to The Divine Comedy, The Goo Goo Dolls to Lily Allen, and two NME New Music Tours – one featuring Boy Kill Boy and Forward Russia, and another with Maximo Park, The Arctic Monkeys, We Are Scientists and Mystery Jets. 

Great success for the students' union

All at Manchester Academy were delighted with their remarkable achievement of winning the prestigious Award given the calibre of the other venues they were up against.

Moreover, having been chosen by the people of Manchester and listeners to Manchester Radio Key 103 made this even more of a fantastic success. 

A bit about the Awards

The Awards were hosted by:

Key 103 and Moving Manchester, in conjunction with Out There Events, at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate.  

The star-studded Awards Dinner and Ceremony celebrates all that has been great in the North's premier city over the past 12 months, culminating with the announcement of the winners across the 15 categories such as leading companies in the regeneration of the region, iconic buildings, retail, lifestyle, entertainment and personality
